Privacy Policy
Last updated: 2026-11-07
Effective date: November 7, 2026
Talescroll (“we”, “us”) is operated by SPIRITSAUTOMATION LLC, Illinois, USA. This policy explains what we collect when you use the Talescroll app, why, and what choices you have.
Contact: [email protected]
1. Who the account is for
Talescroll is a family app. The account is created, paid for, and managed by an adult (a parent or guardian, 18 or older). Children, including children under 13, may use Talescroll on the parent’s account, reading together with the parent or on their own with the parent’s permission. We do not create child profiles and do not ask for a child’s name, age, email, photo, or any other details about a child. Purchases, external links, and account deletion are behind a parental check in the app.
2. What we collect
Account. When you sign in with Apple or Google we receive your name, email address, and profile picture (if you share them), plus an identifier from Apple or Google that links the sign-in to your account. If you use Apple’s “Hide My Email”, we only receive the relay address.
Reading audio. While you read aloud, the app streams the sound from the microphone to our server, which passes it on to a speech recognition provider to turn it into text. We do not store the audio. It is processed in real time and discarded.
What was read. We store the recognised text of what was read, and what we derive from it: the book’s title and author, characters, places, scenes, and the generated illustrations and covers.
Settings and subscription. Your app and reading languages, your family group, your subscription status, and your remaining illustrations.
Usage analytics. Events such as opening the app, signing in, starting a book, or viewing subscription options, linked to your account’s internal ID (never your email or name). We only send a fixed list of non-identifying properties.
Crash reports. Technical error reports (device model, OS version, app version, the error). They are configured not to include personal information.
We do not collect your contacts, location, photos, or advertising identifier, and we do not show ads.
3. How we use it
- To provide the service: recognise the reading, write scenes, generate illustrations, and keep your library in sync across your devices.
- To manage your subscription and illustration balance.
- To prevent abuse, for example to give the free illustrations only once per sign-in (see section 6).
- To fix bugs and improve the app.
Legal bases (EU/UK users). We process your data to perform our contract with you (providing the Service and your subscription), on our legitimate interests (keeping the Service secure, preventing abuse of the free illustrations, fixing errors, and understanding how the app is used), and to meet legal obligations (for example, tax and payment records kept by Apple and RevenueCat).
We do not sell your personal information and do not “share” it for cross-context behavioural advertising, as those terms are defined in California law.
4. Service providers
We share data only with the providers needed to run Talescroll, and only what each one needs:
| Provider | Purpose | What it receives |
|---|---|---|
| Apple, Google | Sign-in | Sign-in request |
| AssemblyAI, Deepgram | Speech recognition | Reading audio (real time, not stored by us) |
| OpenRouter (and the AI models it routes to, including Google) | Understanding the story, writing scenes, generating illustrations | Recognised text and scene descriptions |
| Prodia | Generating character portraits and covers | Image descriptions |
| Google Books | Confirming a book’s title and author | A short excerpt of the recognised text |
| Cloudflare | Storing illustrations, email | Generated images |
| RevenueCat, Apple | Subscriptions and payments | Internal family ID, purchase records |
| PostHog | Usage analytics | Internal account ID, app events |
| Sentry | Crash reporting | Technical error reports |
Payments are handled by Apple. We never see your card details.
5. Where data is processed
Our servers and most of our providers are in the United States. By using Talescroll you understand that your data will be processed there.
6. Retention and account deletion
We keep your data while your account exists.
You can delete your account in the app: Library menu → Delete account. When you do:
- your name, email, profile picture, and the link to your Apple or Google sign-in are erased, and you leave your family group;
- your family’s library (books and illustrations) is removed from your view and can no longer be reached by you or anyone else;
- if you sign in again with the same Apple or Google account, you get a new, empty account.
To make sure the free illustrations are given only once, we keep a one-way fingerprint of your sign-in (a code computed from the Apple or Google identifier that cannot be turned back into it). It contains no name or email and is kept for as long as we offer free illustrations, only to prevent abuse.
Generated illustrations belong to us (see the Terms of Service) and may be kept after the account is deleted, without any link to you.
Deleting the app does not delete your account. Cancel your subscription in your Apple ID settings. Deleting your account does not cancel it.
7. Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example under GDPR in the EU/UK or CCPA in California), you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or receive a copy of your personal information, and to object to some processing. Email [email protected] and we will respond within 30 days. We may need to confirm that the request comes from the account owner.
- EU/UK: you can also complain to your local data protection authority.
- California: we will not treat you differently for exercising your privacy rights.
- India (DPDP Act): for grievances about your personal data, write to the same address; we will respond within the period the law requires.
8. Security
Data is sent over encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS), and access to our servers and databases is restricted.
9. Children
Talescroll is designed to be used by children together with, or with the permission of, their parent or guardian. We follow the U.S. Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and similar laws:
- Voice. When a child reads aloud, the audio of their voice is used only to recognise the words being read, so that the story can be illustrated. It is streamed to our speech recognition provider in real time, used for nothing else, and deleted immediately after the words are recognised. We never store recordings of a child’s voice.
- What is kept. We keep only the recognised text of the book being read (the book’s words, not personal details) and the illustrations made from it.
- No personal details from children. We do not ask a child for, and do not knowingly keep, their name, contact details, photo, or location. Children cannot buy anything, open external links, or change account settings without passing the parental check.
- Analytics and crash reports are tied to the parent’s account, used only to keep the app working and improve it, and never for advertising or profiling a child.
- No ads, no selling of data.
- Parents’ rights. A parent can ask us to review or delete any information connected to their account, and can stop further use at any time by deleting the account in the app or emailing [email protected].
If you believe a child has given us personal information without a parent’s knowledge, contact us and we will delete it.
10. Changes
If we change this policy we will update the effective date above and, for important changes, tell you in the app.
